Copenhagen Retro Concert, November 5th 2005

Premise

As we heard that PRESS PLAY ON TAPE was hosting a Retro Concert in Copenhagen, we started to plan a cool little weekend there. Copenhagen is only 1000 or so kilometers down south from Oulu Finland and that's nothing when the line up has the likes of PPOT, Visa Röster, SID80's, Rob Hubbard and Jeroen Tel! What a great little holiday that would be!

About the same time we released a couple of demo tunes in remix.kwed.org. As the positive feedback started to pour in, our confidence grew and we began to think: If we're going to go, we might as well make the most of it and throw in a couple of tunes ourselves. A couple of e-mails later we were booked!

Copenhagen

After 12 hours of travel from Oulu to Copenhagen, PPOT gave us a very warm welcome. We got to meet most of the people beforehand and to see SID80's rehearse. We got to witness the infamous Danish green Christmas, caught a couple of hours of sleep and headed to the venue next morning.

The place, a large restaurant/cafe/night club in Osterbro a few kilometers from Copenhagen city center, was sold out. A lot of cool people from all over had shown up. It was great to chat with all the people from the retro scene and games industry. There was also a little exhibition with interesting C64-themed art and kick-ass remix CDs for sale. Too bad we didn't see the whole Visa Röster set since we had to prepare for our own performance. How hard can it be to move a bunch of balloons around...

On stage

It was damn hot. Don't know what the deal was, but the stage was the hottest we've ever been on. And by hot we mean Finnish sauna hot! Despite the 90 or so degrees Celsius we managed to put on a good show and got a really excited response from the audience, with lots of requests for a CD. We kicked off with Delta - what would you expect, we're Finns and Mr. Hubbard himself was there! After Delta we played a bunch of songs, there were some bubbles during Bubble Bobble and it was over before we knew it. Time really flies when you're having fun!

After the gig

So, we're at backstage hanging out with Rob... This is how we'll introduce ourselves from now on. Anyhow, Hubbard + Madfiddler threw in beautiful set, SID80's kicked ass and PPOT rocked our socks off. When the club was closed we hit the Irish pub across the street and hung out with the other performers over a pint or two. We partied till 7am and were a bit tired when the hostel's cleaning lady woke us up at 9am for check out. It was sad to leave Denmark behind. Luckily we had another retro party waiting for us back home just in a couple of days.

Epilogue

If we're to have any regrets, it has to be Hane citing Kiss's Cold Gin at the local 7Eleven on Friday at 4am: "The cheapest stuff is all we need". Believe us when we tell you the stuff we got was not what we needed... Another mishap was the ever so horrible goatse fried chicken next morning that we tried as a remedy for the previous night's poison. Due to the graphical nature of the morning's events we won't discuss this any further. All hail King Rondo IV!

A huge thank you to PRESS PLAY ON TAPE for the event! It was an honor to be a part of it. Cheers to all the people we met and special thanks to Uffe & Jesper for giving us a hand with the balls. :)

Yeah, the stage was hot but so was the whole event!
